Children’s Community Garden Opens in Redmond

Orange Blossom Society creates another opportunity for children’s enrichment

with a garden and the Caterpillar Club kick off on May 1, 2010

The Orange Blossom Society will be launching their Children’s Garden with a “free” public community event on Saturday, May 1, 2010 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Activities for the Children’s Garden event include: Planting vegetables in the garden’s ‘Patch for the Hungry’, Arts & Crafts and Introducing The Caterpillar Club™

The intent of The Caterpillar Club™ is to instill curiosity and respect for the natural world inviting children to become enthusiastic stewards of the earth. Gardening activities confirm common sense abilities that foster self-confidence and develop a greater understanding and appreciation of our environment.  Participants in The Caterpillar Club will get to experience field trips, camps, classes and excursions which focus on earth friendly and healthy lifestyles.

The May 1st event will also feature the launch of the Orange Blossom Society Children’s Garden which has been planted by families including children whose ages range from 2-8 years old.  The Children’s Garden includes a beautiful palette of vegetables including pink and yellow potatoes, purple green beans, and rainbow carrots! In addition to the benefits of learning how to harvest their own food, children will learn how to construct scarecrows, erect a bean pole tipi, and build a pea vine tunnel for hours of pea pickin' fun!  “We experienced tremendous response from the community event held in April where we hosted 100+ attendees in the Earth Day festivities which included the Redmond Fire Department, Kid Yoga, Green Redmond Partnership, among others.” says Founder, Sharman Ghio. “The Orange Blossom Society team is dedicated to taking an active role in the Redmond community by offering programs that enrich the lives of families and children.”

“Gardening can be an amazing format for learning respect, harmony, and responsibility.” says, Dana Hein-Skaggs, of Orange Blossom Society. It is an opportunity to experience how plants, animals, insects and human beings relate to one another and require each other to survive.”

Families who are interested bringing their children to attend the May 1st event and who desire access to a full schedule of camps can visit their web site at www.orangeblossomsociety.com or follow OBS on twitter at http://twitter.com/OrangeBSociety
